Cleveland’s only score in nine innings is pitcher Bob Lemon’s home run in the 4th, as the match is tied 1 – 1 on Johnny Lipon’s homer. Lemon opens the 10th with a triple, and two intentional walks follow. With the bases loaded and one out, C Aaron Robinson thinks he has a shot at a double play by just stepping on home. Because of the haze, he does not see 1B Don Kolloway remove the force after fielding the ball hit by slugger Luke Easter, and the Indians win, 2 – 1.
66,924 fans are on hand for Johnny Mize Day at Yankee Stadium, as the Yankees top the fading Red Sox, 9 – 5, to go 4 games up on Boston and 2 1/2 ahead of Detroit. Phil Rizzuto contributes a single, double, and home run, while Yogi Berra adds 4 hits, including a triple. Joe DiMaggio’s hit streak reaches 15. New York will win 5 of their next 7, while the Tigers will manage to go 4-3.
The Braves’ Johnny Sain fails in his attempt to win his 20th game, but hits his first major-league home run, off Larry Jansen, in a 4 – 3 loss to the visiting Giants. With two outs in the 10th, Sam Jethroe loses Don Mueller’s fly ball in the sun and Mueller legs out a triple. Hank Thompson’s single wins it for Jansen. A Saturday crowd of 5,535 watch the Braves drop out of 2nd place, while the Giants move to within three games of the Phils.
The Yankees, tied for first place with the Tigers and two games ahead of Boston, open a crucial series with the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Joe DiMaggio’s 1st-inning home run off Mel Parnell is all the scoring needed, as the Bombers win, 8 – 0. Ed Lopat gives up five hits, including a leadoff triple to Dom DiMaggio.
Rookie Whitey Ford tosses a six-hitter to give the Yankees the rubber game in Detroit, 8 – 1, and move them back into first place. Joe DiMaggio hits his 30th homer and the Yanks score seven runs in the 9th as Ford drives to his seventh win without a loss. The Red Sox will follow the Yankees into Detroit and sweep three from the Tigers.
Johnny Mize hits three home runs in one game for the sixth time in his career, establishing a major league record. The first baseman’s offensive output, which makes him the second player to accomplish a three-homer game in both leagues along with Babe Ruth, isn’t enough when the Yankees lose at Detroit, 9-7.
In Detroit, Vic Raschi posts his 20th win of the season to give New York a hard-fought 7 – 5 win. Raschi walks in two runs in the opening inning as Detroit tallies four runs, but New York comes back as Joe DiMaggio cracks his 29th home run and Johnny Mize follows a walk to Hank Bauer with his 10th homer. New York takes over first place by a half game.
1950 – Sal Maglie’s string of scoreless innings ends at 45, but he beats the Pirates, 3 – 1, in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. Pirate Gus Bell’s 257-foot fly ball barely clears the RF wall at the Polo Grounds. For Maglie, it is his 11th straight win.
