1909 – Chicago pitcher Ed Reulbach’s 14-game winning streak is stopped by the Giants, 5 – 2. New York has now won nine in a row, but Chicago will stop that tomorrow.
John McGraw puts 49-year-old coach Arlie Latham at 2B in a 19 – 3 romp over St. Louis. Latham goes hitless but handles 2 assists. Cy Seymour scores 5 runs.
Umpire Tim Hurst instigates a riot by spitting in the face of Athletics 2B Eddie Collins, who had questioned a call. Under police guard, Hurst is ushered off the field. This incident will eventually lead to Hurst’s banishment from baseball in two weeks.
1909 – After winning 13 in a row, Christy Mathewson loses to Pittsburgh, 3 – 1, giving up four hits and three runs in the 1st inning. Red Ames relieves in the 2nd. Mathewson’s record is now 15-3.
On July 28, 1909, National League President Harry Pulliam commits suicide at the New York Athletic Club. The 40-year-old Pulliam, distraught by his performance in office, had recently been granted a leave of absence.
1909 – Brooklyn’s Jim Pastorius no-hits the Phillies until pinch-hitter Doc Martel laces a one-out triple in the 9th inning. Pastorius wins, 4 – 0.
At Washington Park, the Superbas sweep a twin bill from the visiting Cardinals with identical 1-0 scores. Brooklyn’s southpaw Nap Rucker, who will finish second in the NL with 200 strikeouts, whiffs 16 Redbirds in one of the contests.
On July 22, 1909, At Huntington Grounds future Hall of Famer Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers steals second base, third base, and home plate during the seventh inning against Red Sox pitcher Harry Wolter. It is also Ty’s first swipe of home in his career, the steals came in 6-0 win over the Boston…
Brooklyn ace Nap Rucker strikes out 16 Cardinals in a 1 – 0 win. Rucker will fan 201 batters this year, just four behind Orval Overall, the National League leader.
1909 – New York suffers two losses against the Cards. The first is a line drive in the 7th off the bat of Joe Delahanty that breaks a finger on the left hand of Christy Mathewson. Matty leaves the game and the Cards win, 4 – 3, in 11 innings. The Giants load the bases in the 11th with no outs but fail to score. Matty’s broken finger turns out to be “mashed.”
