On June 10, 1902 Baseball lifer Horace Fogel, also known for his career as a sportswriter, is fired as the manager of the Giants just 44 games into the season. The 51 year-old former skipper, who will go on to an administrative position with the Phillies, will be best remembered in New York for his attempt to turn future Hall of Fame hurler Christy Mathewson, a sophomore pitcher who won 20 games in his rookie year, into a position player.
Mets shortstop Jose Reyes, with his eighth-inning thievery in a 7-4 loss to the Braves at Shea Stadium, becomes the first player to have four straight seasons of 50 or more stolen bases playing for a New York area team, which also includes Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants. The accomplishment extends the infielderās own record, as he is also the only Gotham major leaguer to achieve the feat for three consecutive years.
