October 2, 1949, Brooklyn dogged Dodgers carried to the very last inning of the season scored two runs in the tenth Sunday to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 9 to 7 and win the National League pennant Held scoreless for four innings and facing their top season nemesis in slim Kenny Heintzelman the Brooks put together three ringing hits for the runs which crowned a magnificent relief job by Jack Banta the third Dodger hurler Banta called on in the sixth while the Phillies were coming from behind to tie the score allowed only one hit after Del Ennis greeted him with the single that tied the game That came in the tenth when Mike Goliat rippled a drive to left with one out The big right hander braced He struck out Ed Sanicki Toronto rookie whose three major-league hits have been home runs and then got Richie Ashburn on an easy fly to Luis Olmo.
