October, 2 1949 Fred (Firpo) Marberry, who won fame as a major league relief pitcher, is in “good” shape today after losing his left arm in an automobile accident. Marberry’s car was in collision with one driven by Rufus H. Long of Teague. Tex., early yesterday. The accident occurred about two miles east of here. Marberry’s left arm was severed above the elbow by the impact of the crash. Hospital attendants said early today he had a very pood nicht and was in “good shope.” A .righthander, Marberry spent 13 years in the big league. He won 146 games and lost 87 for Wash-inton and Detroit and was a prime factor in Washington’s 1924-25 pennant winners and Detroit’s 1934 champs.
