Dangerous Row Looms in Sign-Stealing Charge

By HAROLD KAESE EN ROUTE TO NEW YORK, Oct. 2 The World Series took a new, exciting, and perhaps a dangerous turn today as the Yankees and Cardinals neared New York, where the third game will be played tomorrow when a spokesman for the racy Red Birds said that Art Fletcher, third base coach for the champions, was trying to read St. Louis’ pitchers and hand signs up to Yankee hitters. A pretty important member of the Cardinals, whose name isn’t to be revealed, said, “that Fletcher is stealing our signs right and left and tipping off the hitters. Do you know what that means? It means he’s liable to guess wrong, cross up the hitter, and somebody’ll be hit behind the ear.” He paused a moment and then added, “of course, it’ll be an accident, but who’ll know?”

Reading pitcher is an old trick with third base coaches and is an act of reconnaissance particularly favored in the American League by such outlooks as Fletcher, Del Baker, and Luke Sewell. They note that the hurler fingers his curve differently than his fastball, and just as he throws, they let the batsman know what’s coming through a voice signal. It’s helpful in the clutches, but sometimes the coach guesses wrong, or the pitcher crosses him up intentionally, and then it’s not healthy to be bending over for the curve when a fastball is coming. That’s what the Yankees may find themselves doing.
