At Crosley Field, Smoky Burgess hits three home runs and drives in nine runs as the Redlegs rout the Pirates, 16 – 5. In the 4th inning, Roberto Clemente does his bit to curtail Burgess, leaping into the right center field screen to snare a line drive that has extra bases written all over it.
1954 – Giants OF Dusty Rhodes hits three consecutive home runs at the Polo Grounds to back Johnny Antonelli’s 10 – 0 whipping of St. Louis. It is Antonelli’s 10th consecutive win. Willie Mays smacks his 36th homer, a 447-foot clout to left field.
Led by OF Jim Pendleton’s three home runs, the Braves tie the Yankees’ 1939 major-league record for the most homers in a game with eight in their 19 – 4 win over Pittsburgh in the first game of a doubleheader. Pendleton is only the second rookie in history to hit three home runs in one game. In game two of the doubleheader, the Braves hit four more long balls to win 11 – 5. The 12 homers in a doubleheader shatter the previous mark of 9. Eddie Mathews’s four dingers for the day give him a National League-leading 43; he will end the season with 47 home runs, 30 of them on the road to set a major-league record.
Del Wilber hits three solo round-trippers in the Phillies’ victory over Cincinnati in the nightcap at Shibe Park, making it the first time that a player has accounted for all the runs in a 3-0 game with home runs. The 32 year-old catcher will hit a total of only 19 round-trippers during his major league career.
The Pirates’ Ralph Kiner drives in seven runs, hitting three home runs, including his 10th grand slam, in a 13 – 12 slugfest win over the Dodgers. His final homer, a solo shot off Erv Palica in the 8th, breaks a 12 – 12 tie. Manager Chuck Dressen berates Palica, publicly questioning the pitcher’s courage by clutching his throat in a choke signal. In Kiner’s final at bat, in the 9th, Carl Furillo pulls down the slugger’s long drive near the CF gate. Joe Garagiola and Gus Bell also homer for the Bucs, while Roy Campanella and Jackie Robinson homer for Brooklyn.
Johnny Mize hits three home runs in one game for the sixth time in his career, establishing a major league record. The first baseman’s offensive output, which makes him the second player to accomplish a three-homer game in both leagues along with Babe Ruth, isn’t enough when the Yankees lose at Detroit, 9-7.
