1909 – The Cubs and Giants swap shutouts in this Monday doubleheader. Chicago wins the opener, 2 – 0, in 11 innings, and Christy Mathewson outpitches Ed Reulbach in the nitecap to win, 5 – 0, on five hits.
The Pirates sweep an a.m.-p.m. doubleheader against the Cardinals. Honus Wagner is 5 for 5 in the morning game, and 1 for 2 in the afternoon.
New York sweeps the Pirates, beating Lefty Leifield, 7 – 0, on a three-hitter by Christy Mathewson, then taking the nitecap, 7 – 4. Pittsburgh racks up three homers – by Honus Wagner, Chief Wilson and Alan Storke – but to no avail. Joe McGinnity wins the nitecap with relief help from Hooks Wiltse.
Stoney McGlynn of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches both games in a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, winning a 1 – 0 five-hitter in the opener. The Reds win the nitecap, 5 – 1.
1906 – The Highlanders win their fifth doubleheader in a row – a record – as they tally a double shutout of Boston, 7 – 0 and 1 – 0. Their win streak will go through September 8th and will stretch to 15 victories, propelling New York to a 1 1/2 game lead in the American League.
1904 – In front of 37,000 fans the Giants sweep the Beaneaters, beating Boston, 6 – 1 and 4 – 3. Christy Mathewson wins the opener, beating Kaiser Wilhelm, and is not scored upon until the 9th when Jim Delahanty and Tom Needham triple. Red Ames wins the nitecap. Following the Giant sweep, excited fans hoist John McGraw up to carry him to the Polo Grounds field house. But McGraw gets dropped during the excitement, sustaining a sprained ankle.
1900 – In American League action, Rube Waddell throws two complete games as Milwaukee sweeps a doubleheader from the Chicago White Stockings, 2 – 1 and 1 – 0. After throwing 17 innings in the first game, the colorful southpaw is coaxed by skipper Connie Mack, who promises him a few days off to go fishing to pitch the nightcap, he hurls a five-inning one-hitter.
1889 – Old Hoss Radbourn pitches a complete doubleheader for Boston but fails to win either game. After losing the opener to Cleveland, 3 – 0, he has to hit a home run himself in the 9th inning of the nightcap to salvage a 4 – 4 tie.
On his birthday, Mickey Welch throws two complete game victories when Troy sweeps a doubleheader from the Bisons at Buffalo’s Riverside Grounds, 8-3 and 12-0. The 22 year-old future Hall of Famer, who finishes the season with a 21-18 record, will complete 525 games of the 549 he starts for the Haymakers (NA) and Giants (NL) during his 13-year tenure in the major leagues.
