The Red Sox come back to beat the Tigers 13-11, overcoming a nine-run deficit in the Bennett Park contest. Duffy Lewis’ tenth-inning grand slam proves to be the difference in the game that also featured Ty Cobb’s first bases-loaded round-tripper.
1901 – Jimmy Sheckard becomes the first 20th-century player to hit grand slams in two consecutive games, as Brooklyn pounds Cincinnati, 16 – 2. Frank Kitson homers and takes the victory. The 41 runs in two games is a franchise record.
At Haymakers’ Grounds, future Hall of Fame first baseman Roger Connor becomes the first major leaguer to hit a grand slam, giving the Troy Trojans a 7-4 walk-off victory over the Worcester Ruby Legs. The 23 year-old Waterbury, CT native’s sayonara slam, a home run which wins a game when a team is down by three runs in the bottom of the final inning, comes with two outs.
