Ernie Banks, in a 6-5 Cubs’ extra-inning loss to the Cardinals, hits his fifth grand slam of the season to establish a new major league mark, previously shared with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, among the others who also connected four times with bases full. The Chicago infielder hits his historic four-run homer off 19 year-old flamethrower Lindy McDaniel, making his first major league first start after receiving a $50,000 bonus.

Dodger backup 1B Wayne Belardi scores two runs in the 8th inning, one on a pinch-hit grand slam. His slam is the third Dodger grand slam in three games (Gil Hodges connected on the 16th, and Billy Cox, on the 17th). The Dodgers’ 8 – 6 win over the Cardinals puts Brooklyn three games ahead of Milwaukee.
At Washington’s Griffith Stadium, Johnny Mize pinch-hits a grand slam, giving the Yankees a 5-1 victory over the Senators. The ‘Big Cat’ has now homered in all fifteen major league ballparks presently in use, with Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis being used as the home for both the Cardinals and Browns.
1950 – Sid Gordon of the Boston Braves hits the first National League grand slam of the season, as Boston beats the New York Giants, 10 – 6, at the Polo Grounds. There will be 35 grand slams in the league and 68 in all this year. Both are records but both will later be topped.

Vern Stephens becomes the first player to hit two extra-inning home runs in the same game. The Browns shortstop puts St. Louis ahead with a solo shot in the 11th, and after the Red Sox tie the score in the bottom of the frame he goes deep again in the 13th with the eventual winning run in the team’s 4-3 victory at Fenway Park.
