The former major league catcher had taken over as the team’s interim manager in mid-May for Charlie Dressen, who was stricken with a heart attack, dying before the end of the summer.

Al Lopez resigns as the manager of the White Sox. The future Hall of Fame skipper will briefly return to the Chicago dugout to manage 47 games in 1968 and another 17 games the following season, before retiring for good.
On July 25, 1965, New York Mets manager Casey Stengel falls and breaks his hip after attending the Mets’ Old-Timers’ dinner. The 74-year-old Stengel will have hip replacement surgery the next day, ending his managerial career.
