1961 – Rumors swirl that legendary manager Leo Durocher, currently a coach with the Dodgers, would be named the first manager of the new Houston franchise. Reports of phone conversations between Durocher and General Manager Gabe Paul are true but nothing materializes beyond that. Durocher would eventally lead the club in 1972 after several years as skipper of the Cubs.
After dropping their eighth straight decision, the Senators name Cookie Lavagetto to replace Chuck Dressen, who compiled a meager 116-212 (.354) record during his two-plus seasons as the team’s manager. Washington’s new skipper will not fare much better, finishing the year in last place, 43 games behind the first-place Yankees.�

1954 – Chicago Cubs manager Phil Cavarretta gives team owner Phil Wrigley an honest assessment of the Cubs’ chances, and is fired for his defeatist attitude, becoming the first manager ever to be given the gate during spring training. Stan Hack replaces him. Cavarretta is right: the Cubs will drop to seventh place this year.
