Bob Cain of the St. Louis Browns and Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians each pitch one-hitters, with the Browns prevailing, 1 – 0. This ties a major league record for the fewest hits by two teams in a game (since broken). Bobby Young hits a triple in the 1st inning and scores on an Al Rosen error as the Browns move into first place. The Indians’ only hit is a single by Luke Easter. For Feller, it is the fourth time he’s tossed a one-hitter against the Browns.
Preacher Roe wins his 20th game against just two losses, as the Dodgers edge the Pirates, 3 – 1. Andy Pafko hits his 14th homer for Brooklyn, still six games ahead of the Giants.

P Russ Meyer hurls a 1 – 0 shutout over the Cubs, the fourth shutout in a row for the Phillies staff. Robin Roberts, Ken Johnson and Bubba Church pitched the earlier whitewashings.
Cleveland whips the Senators, 16 – 0‚ with Bob Feller pitching a 2-hitter. Larry Doby has a homer and 4 RBIs to lead the Tribe.
Larry Jansen of the Giants wins the first game of a doubleheader with a 3 – 0 shutout of the Cards, and Dave Koslo follows suit with a 5 – 0 two-hitter in the second game, giving New York a sweep of the twin bill. Jansen has not allowed a run in 29 innings, while for Koslo it is the start of a 13-game win streak over the Cards. The Cards were last shut out in a twin bill on July 2, 1933, by the Giants.
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ted Wilks loses his first game in 77 consecutive appearances dating back to September 8, 1945. Wilks posted a 12-0 record during the streak which included four starts.
