Dazzy Vance strikes out seven consecutive batters to establish a major league record when the Brooklyn Robins defeat the Cubs at Ebbets Field, 4-0. The future Hall of Famer, who will compile a 28-6 record for the Brooks this season, will lead the National League in strikeouts with 262.
Joe Sewell of the Cleveland Indians strikes out twice in one game for the first time in his career. Washington Senators rookie Cy Warmoth is the pitcher. In a 14-year career, Sewell will have only one other multiple strikeout game.
Walter Johnson, in an 11-inning complete-game losing effort against Philadelphia, fans seven A’s batters to surpass Cy Young’s major league mark of 2,803 career strikeouts. In 1927, the ‘Big Train’ will finish his 21-year tenure with the Senators with 3,509 punch outs, a record which will last for 62 seasons when it is broken by Nolan Ryan in 1983.
The New York Giants score a major league record 10 runs before the St. Louis Cardinals retire the first batter in the 1st inning. Fred Merkle drives in six of the Giants’ 13 runs in the 1st en route to a 19 – 5 victory. When Giants manager John McGraw decides to save starting pitcher Christy Mathewson for another day, Rube Marquard enters the game in the 2nd inning and sets a record for relievers (since broken) with 14 strikeouts in his eight-inning appearance.
Wee Willie Keeler strikes out for only the second time this season, both times by spitballer Ed Walsh of the White Sox.
On October 3, 1904 – Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants strikes out 16 Cardinals in a 3 – 1 Giants victory. His 16 strikeouts set a new record as he finishes the game in one hour and 15 minutes.
In his last minor league appearance, 23 year-old Cy Young strikes out 18 batters en route to tossing a no-hitter in a Tri-State contest against McKeesport (PA). The right-hander will amass a record 511 victories during his 22-year Hall of Fame career.
New York Gotham pitcher Mickey Welch strikes out the first nine Cleveland Blues hitters to come to the plate, establishing a major league record. The mark will last until 1970, when Mets right-hander Tom Seaver strikes out the last ten San Diego he faces in a Shea Stadium contest.
