Cincinnati wins its 16th straight game against Philadelphia as Joey Jay blanks the Phils, 5 – 0. It is the 13th loss in a row for the Quakers, their longest string of defeats since 1936; they’ve won just one in 19 games. Elio Chacon hits his first major league homer, off Don Ferrarese.
After 32 scoreless innings, the Chicago White Sox score in the 3rd, and go on to win 7 – 4 over the first-place New York Yankees. Billy Pierce is the winner, despite giving up a moon shot to Mickey Mantle that lands in the left-center field bleachers. The drive is measured at 478 feet.
Ernie Banks hits a grand slam – the first of five on the year – to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 10 – 8 victory that snaps the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 11-game winning streak.
Against the Phillies, Cubs player-manager Phil Cavarretta earns his money by driving home three runs in a first-game win, 5 – 4, snapping the Cubs’ 10-game home losing streak. His triple in the 6th off Robin Roberts ends the Cubs’ scoreless inning skein of 31 innings, and the consecutive scoreless innings by Phils pitchers at 41. Cavarretta takes the bench in the second game but inserts himself as a pinch-hitter in the 7th when Roberts relieves, and hits a grand slam home run as the Cubs sweep, winning the nitecap, 8 – 6. The nitecap loss goes to Bubba Church, who put two runners on before giving way to Roberts. It is Church’s first and only career loss to Chicago after nine straight wins.
1951 – The Philadelphia Athletics win their first game at Fenway Park since September 12, 1948, beating Mel Parnell and the Boston Red Sox, 6 – 3. Making it sweeter is besting Parnell, winner of 10 straight over Philadelphia. The Athletics break a 3 – 3 tie in the 8th inning with three runs to make Alex Kellner the winner, just the third left-handed pitcher since 1948 to go the distance in Fenway.
Cleveland’s streak of victories (8), shutouts (4) and scoreless innings (47) ends in the ninth inning when Bob Lemon walks Pat Seerey and yields home runs to Aaron Robinson and Dave Philley in a 3 – 2 loss to the White Sox.
1948 – Detroit’s Dizzy Trout shuts out the Red Sox, 13 – 0, to stop Boston’s win streak at 13 games. Hoot Evers paces the 18-hit attack with four hits.
