January 30, 1960 – When Henry Aaron was informed that new manager Charlie Dressen was considering moving him from right field to second base, Aaron responded, “I’ll play second if he’ll play third.”
Colts first baseman Cap Anson becomes the first major leaguer to collect 3000 hits when he singles off George Blackburn. The 45 year-old infielder’s historic hit comes in a 2-1 loss to Baltimore at Chicago’s West Side Grounds.

Today’s games feature two teams coming back from nine-run deficits. First, the Rockies are down 10 – 1 in the 3rd, but rally to beat Atlanta, 12 – 10. They score four runs off Jonny Venters in the 8th to take the lead. The Reds also blow an early 10 – 1 lead achieved against rookie starter Madison Bumgarner in their game against the Giants, but come back to tie it at 11-all in the 9th on a single by Paul Janish. Joey Votto drives in the winning run with a single in the 12th, going 4 for 7 with 2 homers and 4 RBI. Barry Zito is the loser in only the second relief appearance of his career.

Ria Cortesio, professional baseball’s only active female umpire and sixth overall, is released after nine years of making calls in the minors. The 31 year-old crew chief, whose mask is in the Hall of Fame, worked the Futures Game and Home Run Derby at the 2006 All-Star Game played in Pittsburgh, and she was on the bases for an exhibition game between the Diamondbacks and Cubs during spring training.
