Chicago Cubs trade two-time National League batting champion Bill Madlock

On February 11 1977   The Chicago Cubs trade two-time National League batting champion Bill Madlock and infielder Rob Sperring to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Bobby Murcer, third baseman Steve Ontiveros, and a minor league pitcher. In 1976, Madlock led the NL with a .339 mark, while Murcer hit 23 home runs and 90 RBI. Madlock leaves Chicago having hit .336 for them, which ties him with Riggs Stephenson for the top career average in team history.

During the 1979 season, San Francisco will trade the fiercely competitive ‘Mad Dog’ to the Pirates, where he will play a major role in the team’s world championship that season and will win two more batting crowns during his seven-year tenure in Pittsburgh.

However, the official lineup card handed to HP Umpire Joe Rue showed the two players reversed. In the top of the first, Wally Moses singled, Roy Schalk sacrificed Moses to second and Ralph Hodgin flied out. Hal Trosky was walked intentionally and Carnett singled to left, scoring Moses. On the throw home, Hodgin advanced to third and Carnett to second. Browns manager Luke Sewell talked to umpire Rue, with the latter calling out Curtwright and nullifying the run. The Browns won the game, 5 to 1.
