Biography
With an unusually erect righthanded batting stance in which he rested his bat lazily on his shoulder, Stapleton hit .321 as the Red Sox’ rookie second baseman in 1980. His batting average declined each season thereafter, bottoming out at .128 in 1986, when he was a late-inning defensive replacement for the hobbling Bill Buckner at first base.
