Detroit hits four home runs in the 1st inning in an 8 – 2 win over the Indians

On July 29, 1974 — Detroit hits four home runs in the 1st inning in an 8 – 2 win over the Indians. Al Kaline, Bill Freehan and Mickey Stanley hit consecutive home runs off Fritz Peterson, and Ed Brinkman adds another later in the inning, off Steve Kline. It is the first time in history the a team has hit 4 homeruns in the first inning.

“HEY, WE’RE in the rec-ord books,” Kaline shouted across the room to his comrades, and then added, “You never know what’s gonna happen. I never thought of it being a record at all.”

There were all kinds of records mentioned in the aftermath. For instance, Kaline, Freehan and Stanley hit theirs in a row, polishing off , Peterson (7-6) marking only the fourth time in American League history that three had been hit in a row in the first inning. It also was only the 38th time in AL history it had ever been done, period. And Kaline had a hand in one of the other 37, rapping one in between homers by Aurelio Rodriguez and Willie Horton off Yankee lefthander Wade Blasingame June 27, 1972. This also was only the eighth time overall that four homers had been hit in one inning in the AL. This was also the first time in the 74 season the Tigers hit back to back homeruns.
