Oakland OF Jose Canseco is bombarded with assorted objects by unruly fans at Yankee Stadium

On July 29, 1991 — During a game at Yankee Stadium, Oakland OF Jose Canseco is bombarded with assorted objects by unruly fans. Included among the objects are an inflatable doll, a transistor radio, and a head of cabbage. Oakland escapes with a 10 – 8 victory.

“It was like the wild kingdom out there’ Canseco said after scoring the go-ahead run Monday night in the Oakland Athletics victory over file New York Yankees ‘ “I was afraid someone was going to jump out of the stands” Canseco said referring to late-inning disturbances in the right-field stands Fans hurled a large inflatable female doll baseball and assorted trash toward the A’s right fielder A couple of fans also brought along Madonna posters — Canseco visited the pop star’s apartment during Oakland’s first trip to New York this season. “It looked pretty real,” Canseco said. “At first, I thought it was a person. I hear a boom, and then I think, ‘Oh, Weep, a girl fell over.’ “… I don’t know (what the T-shirt said). What do you think, that I went over there and picked her up and looked at her? I have no idea. I think they said it was Madonna or something. “Just kidding,” Canseco said.

“They were heckling me like normal, and then they were fighting among themselves. Every time I turned around, a fistfight would break out. I have no idea what was going on. It was wild. It was the wild kingdom out there . . . “I’ve never seen this stuff happen here before, or anywhere. Fights were breaking out every five minutes. Security guards were getting hit. It was better than Tyson and Ruddock.”

Another controversy that set up the winning rally after New York rallied from an 8-1 deficit With the score 8-8 Canseco readied second on a ground-rule double that bounced off Pat Kelly’s glove at third and was accidentally fielded by a bellboy down the left-field line “He might have made second anyway” Kelly said.

Dave Henderson who had four hits then doubled in Canseco Terry Steinbach reached base next when reliever Steve Howe (3-1) couldn’t handle Don Mattingly’s throw at first then threw wildly to home plate Henderson scored on the play that had Howe charged with two errors New York which has lost six of its last eight came back from the seven-run deficit with three runs in the third and one in the fourth off Eric Show and three in the fifth off Curt Young.
