On August 23, 1998 — San Francisco Giants OF Barry Bonds hits his 26th homer, the 400th of his career, off Kirt Ojala of the Florida Marlins in the Giants’ 10 – 5 victory. He thus becomes the first player in major league history with more than 400 career home runs and 400 stole bases.
“A World Series is probably the only thing really left” said Bonds 34. “Everything else is an added notch to an outstanding career for an individual person but like to win something as a team done enough individually.”
But as Bonds checked out the gifts at his locker he laughed when asked to compare his accomplishment with the assault on Roger home-run record by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa is Bonds said “I got nine writers standing here McGwire had 200 writers when he had 30 home runs. What they are going through is huge You have two players who might break the record in the record in the same year thats crazy.”
Bonds who played for Jim Leyland the Marlins Manager tipped his hat as he crossed home plate.
Bond’s current manager, Dusty Baker said.”I don’t think people realize how big a feat this is.”
