His major-league leading ERA of 1.70 convinced voters to set aside his win/loss record, which was largely influenced by terrible run support. In the American League, Blake Snell of the Rays is the winner after going 21-5 with an ERA of 1.89.

The Yankees sign free-agent pitcher Andy Hawkins, and the Expos trade P John Dopson and SS Luis Rivera to Boston for SS Spike Owen, and OF Tracy Jones to San Francisco for OF-1B Mike Aldrete.

1989 – It is 100 degrees in Texas and the Royals and Rangers are equally hot as seven batters get hit by pitches, the third time this century this has happened. The Royals put the game out of reach with a 3-run homer by Bo Jackson in the 7th to win, 13 – 2. When Mike Macfarlane is plunked in the 8th, the fifth Royal hit, he rushes the mound and tackles reliever Craig McMurtry.
