July 18, 2021, Pronouncing the death of the 300 game-winner may be a bit premature. Since July 7, 1900, when Kid Nichols became the first modern-day 300 game-winner since John Clarkson, who won his 300th game seven years nine and a half months earlier on September 21, 1892, there have been five significant gaps between pitchers entering the 300 win club. There was a 10-year 11-month gap between Cy Young’s 300th victory and Christy Mathewson’s 300th win, followed by a 16 year 10 month interim between Grover Alexander’s 300th victory and Lefty Grove’s 300th and final career win on July 25, 1941, four and a half months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Grove would prove to be the last 300 game-winner until Warren Spahn logged his 300 career victory on August 11, 1961–20 years and 17 days later. The next longest gap would be 18 years nine months three weeks between Early Wynn’s 300th and final victory and Gaylord Perry’s 300th win on May 6, 1982. On June 13, 2003, Roger Clemens became the first 300 game-winner since Nolan Ryan won his 300th game 12 years 10 and a half months earlier on July 31, 1990.
It has been 12 years, one and a half months since Randy Johnson won his 300th game. Since 1961, there have been 12 new members of the 300 win club. The AVERAGE number of victories since each one reached 35 years of age has been 132.
