Blanking the Royals, 12 – 0, Twins hurler Kyle Lohse helps to establish a club record throwing the team’s third consecutive shutout. Johan Santana and Brad Radke started the streak of 27 scoreless innings, also a franchise record.

Johan Santana (20-6, 265, 2.61), winning the American League top pitching honor with 28 first-place votes, becomes the 18th unanimous Cy Young winner selected by the BBWAA. The 25 year-old Venezuelan southpaw joins Jim Perry (1970) and Frank Viola (1988) as the only Twin hurlers to earn the award.

2005 – The Minnesota Twins sign Johan Santana, who was eligible for arbitration, to a four-year deal. In 2004, the 25-year-old lefthander became the first Venezuelan pitcher to win the Cy Young Award.

Johan Santana’s streak of 22 straight starts of allowing three or fewer runs comes to an end when the southpaw gets the victory in the Twins’ 8-4 victory over Seattle at Safeco Field. Last season’s Cy Young Award winner has the second longest streak of giving fewer than four runs in consecutive outings, trailing only Dwight Gooden’s 24 in 1985.

Johan Santana signs a 6-year, $137.5 million deal with the New York Mets

2008 – Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners hits a 2nd-inning grand slam off Johan Santana of the New York Mets in a 5 – 2 victory. He is the first American League pitcher to hit a grand slam since Steve Dunning did so on May 11, 1971.

The Mets blow a 5 – 2 lead entering the 9th as four relievers fail to protect Johan Santana’s fine starting effort. The Phillies rally for a 8 – 6 win and overtake the Mets for first in the NL East Division. So Taguchi and Jimmy Rollins hit two-run doubles. The Mets are without closer Billy Wagner, undergoing testing for shoulder pain.

With the Mets’ backs to the wall, Johan Santana pitches a three-hit 2 – 0 shutout against the Marlins. When the Brewers lose, 7 – 3, to Ted Lilly and the Cubs later today, the two teams are tied in the National League Wild Card race with only one game to play.

Joining Mike McCormick, who copped the honor in 1967, Tim Lincecum (18-5, 2.62) becomes the second San Francisco Giant hurler to win the NL Cy Young Award. The 24 year-old right-hander, finishing his first full big league season, receives 23 out of 32 first-place votes cast by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America to finish ahead of Arizona’s Brandon Webb and New York’s Johan Santana.

The Mets need 20 innings to beat the Cardinals, 2 – 1, in the longest game since this date in 2008. Jose Reyes drives in the winning run with a sacrifice fly after going 0 for 7 for the day in a game dominated by the pitchers. Both starters, Johan Santana for New York and Jaime Garcia for St. Louis, pitch 7 scoreless innings and the game is still scoreless after 17 frames, but the Cardinals eventually run out of able-bodied pitchers. 2B Felipe Lopez is sent out to the mound and pitches a scoreless 18th inning, while P Kyle Lohse goes out to play left field, but their teammate, OF Joe Mather, gives up a run in the top of the 19th. The Mets sweep the Dodgers in a doubleheader, 4 – 0 and 10 – 5, to extend their winning streak to 6 games and to record their 8th win in their last 9 games. Jason Bay hits his first home run as a Met in support of Johan Santana’s pitching in the opener, while David Wright drives in four runs in the nitecap.

The Phillies take over first place in the NL East by beating Mets ace Johan Santana like a rag doll. Santana gives up 10 runs, including 8 in the 4th inning, which he fails to complete. With the Mets leading 5 – 3, he issues a two-out bases-loaded walks to his opposite, Jamie Moyer, then Shane Victorino blasts a grand slam to open the floodgates. Chase Utley adds a two-run shot to chase Santana; Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard had homered earlier against him. The Phillies win, 11 – 5.

The Mets win their first subway series against the crosstown Yankees since 1998 with a 6 – 4 victory. Jason Bay homers twice – only his second and third long balls of the year – against CC Sabathia. Johan Santana is the winner and Francisco Rodriguez picks up the save by striking out Alex Rodriguez with two men on to end the game.

In San Diego, Adrian Gonzalez hits a walk-off grand slam in the 11th inning to lead the Padres to a 5 – 1 win over the Mets. San Diego’s David Eckstein had tied the game at 1 with a single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th against Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez, after 8 scoreless innings by Johan Santana. It’s not the only late-game grand slam hit today: in Toronto, Carl Crawford of the Rays also hits one, capping a six-run 9th inning, to beat the Blue Jays, 7 – 3, and give David Price his American League-leading 8th win of the year.

The Yankees are back in first place in the AL East, one game ahead of the surging Red Sox and slumping Rays, after CC Sabathia pitches 8 scoreless innings as the Bronx Bombers shut out the Mets and Johan Santana, 4 – 0. All the runs come on Mark Teixeira’s grand slam.

The Cards lost the first two games of the series by shutout, including Johan Santana’s no-hitter on June 1st, and finally end their 26-inning scoring drought in the 8th, on an RBI single by Adron Chambers.

Johan Santana shuts out the Dodgers, 5 – 0, allowing 3 hits over 8 innings. It is the Dodgers’ seventh consecutive loss. Ike Davis hits a three-run homer for the Mets.

Ben Sheets makes a successful return to the big leagues, a few days short of two years since his last game before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He keeps the Mets scoreless over 6 innings as the Braves win, 6 – 1. The game features the ejection of Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen, who starts arguing with home plate umpire C.B. Bucknor during a 6th-inning mound visit; the Braves score all their runs in that inning, highlighted by Freddie Freeman’s three-run homer off Johan Santana.

Jason Marquis pitches a two-hitter to lead the Padres to a 5 – 0 win at Pittsburgh, where the Padres have won 11 consecutive games. The 27 year-old southpaw, the youngest American League pitcher to win 20 since Johan Santana reached the milestone with Minnesota in 2004, will edge Tigers ace Justin Verlander for the AL Cy Young Award.

David Price, with his 11-strikeout performance in the Rays’ 5-1 victory over the Pirates, has whiffed at least ten batters in five straight games, marking the 22nd time a pitcher has accomplished the feat in major league history. The 28 year-old southpaw joins an impressive group of hurlers that includes Pedro Martinez (6), Randy Johnson (8), Nolan Ryan (3), Curt Schilling (1), J.R.
