October 1, 1889 Another example of the highly desirable baseball “currency” of the late 1800s, when various local retailers distributed discount coupons that blended the design of paper money with images of popular baseball teams to help advertise their establishments. This piece, advertising the Wm. Stuart Furniture, Carpet and Stove store of Baltimore, Md (coincidentally located just a block away from Oriole Park at Camden Yards today) features members of the 1889 Chicago White Stockings. The White Stockings, who finished third in 1889, 19 games behind New York and 18 behind Boston, featured future Hall of Famers Cap Anson (who served as player/manager) and Hugh Duffy. On the reverse can be found Anson, Mark Baldwin, Tom Burns, Tom Daly, Dell Darling, Silver Flint, Bob Pettit, Fred Pfeffer, Jimmy Ryan, Marty Sullivan, George Van Haltren, and Ed Williamson.
