On June 14, 1990, the National League announces that it will expand by two teams â increasing its membership from 12 to 14 â beginning in 1993. The National League will add the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins to its roster of teams.
In a move designed to get a jump on the National League in the expansion race, the American League grants franchises to Washington and Los Angeles, and okays the Senatorsâ move to Minnesota. The decision to place a new team in Washington is partly political because the owners fear the nationâs lawmakers, upset about losing the American Leagueâs oldest club, will threaten baseballâs anti-trust exemption.
