April 14, 1978 – In the Boston Red Sox home opener vs the Texas Rangers‚ newly acquired starter Dennis Eckersley pitches into the 10th inning before giving way to Dick Drago‚ Jim Rice’s 395 foot single scores Butch Hobson with the winner in the bottom of the 10th‚ and Boston wins 5-4. Hobson had three hits and newly acquire Jerry Remy, who grew up a Red Sox fan playing in nearby Fall River, playing his first home game a Fenway Park chipped in with two hits and had sacrificed Hobson to second so he could score the winning run in the 10th.
