On December 31, 1990 — Oakland Athletics third baseman Carney Lansford is severely hurt in a snowmobile accident.

Lansford could’ve been killed. While driving his snowmobile on New Year’s Eve outside his home in Baker, Ore., he didn’t realize he was near a barbed-wire fence hidden under a snowbank.

“I got my property line mixed up,” he said. “In the crash, I tore two ligaments in my knee. I’m lucky the knee is all that happened. I could’ve been paralyzed.”

He will undergo surgery on January 6th to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee as well as repair other ligament damage. The 33-year-old Lansford will play just five games in 1991, but return to the starting lineup in 1992. He will retire at age 35 after the 1992 season, he hit 260 for the A’s in 1992.
