On February 16 1989 – Orel Hershiser becomes the first player in major league history to sign a contract that calls for a $3 million salary by inking a three-year, $7.9 million contract with the Los Angels Dodgers. Hershiser is coming off his historic scoreless inning streak and a heroic playoff run that gave the dodgers the World Series title.
The 1988 Cy Young Award recipient, went 23-7 with a 2,26 ERA, he leads the league in innings pitched and complete games. Known as “Bulldog” he went 3-0 in the playoffs with a 1.04 ERA in 6 appearances. He started 5 games, completed 3, and picked up the save in game 7 vs the New York Mets in the NLCS. He won both the NLCS and World Series MVP Awards.
He will post an 18-18 record along with an ERA of 3.65 during the span of the agreement.
