On April 27, 1983, future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan becomes the all-time strikeout king in major league history. He breaks Walter Johnson’s 56-year record of 3,508 career strikeouts
The Houston Astros’ ace strikes Montreal Expos pinch-hitter Brad Mills on a 1-2 curveball in the 8th inning as the Houston Astros beat the Expos, 4 – 2. Ryan accomplishes the feat in 2,500 less innings than Johnson needed to set it. Nolan tips his cap to the applauding Canadian fans then quickly resumes. The 36 year-old fireballer’s feat will also be accomplished by Steve Carlton and Gaylord Perry, respectively, in May and August.
