Born on This Date – George “Sparky” Anderson – norm on February 22, 1934.

George only played one year in the Majors, 1959 for the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in 152 games with 477 at-bats and a .218 batting average. He was then sent back to the Minors, never to play at the Big League level again. During his playing days, a radio announcer gave him a nickname because of his feisty play, and “Sparky” stuck.

In 1964 Sparky had the opportunity to Manage at the Minor League level. Over the next four years all he did was Manage four pennant winners in four consecutive years. By 1970 he was handed the keys to drive the Big Red Machine.

The rest was historical. He led three teams to World Series titles, the 1975 & 1976 Reds and the 1984 Tigers.

Sparky was inducted into Cooperstown in the class of 2000.

“Captain Hook” loved his players, unless they were Pitchers.

I included a great pitcher of Sparky with Jim McGlothlin & Johnny Bench Kelly Jo Mcglothlin — with Tom Derringer Sr.
