At Milwaukee, Gordy Coleman collects eight hits and leads the Reds to a sweep over the Braves. The Reds win the opener, 8 – 5, as Coleman collects five hits, including a 3-run homer in the 13th off Warren Spahn. Gordy chips in with three more hits in the nitecap, a 4 – 3 Reds win.
The Senators stake rookie Carl Mathias to a 3 – 0 lead over New York, but a Mickey Mantle solo shot, a few feet left of the 456-foot sign in left at Yankee Stadium, puts New York on the board. The Nats up the score to 5 – 1, but Mantle then bangs a 3-run homer to make it 5 – 4 and knock out Mathias, who in his 11 major league games will give up three homers to Mantle. In the 9th, Roger Maris poles a two-run homer, his 28th, to give New York a 7 – 6 victory.
Whitey Ford (14-2) tops the Senators, 5 – 1, to give the 2nd place Yankees their 22nd win of the month. Roger Maris drives in three runs and Mickey Mantle lines a shot over CF Willie Tasby that rebounds for an inside-the-park home run. Ford becomes the first pitcher in American League history to win eight games in one month.
With three round-trippers at Philadelphia – one a 10th-inning shot to win 8 – 7 – Willie Mays becomes the 4th major league player with three or more home runs twice in one season. Manager Gene Mauch’s efforts to conceal his starting pitcher and force Al Dark’s hand has a Phillie lineup including hurlers Don Ferrarese (batting leadoff, playing CF), Jim Owens (3rd, RF), Chris Short (7th, C), and Ken Lehman (9th, P) against San Francisco. When Dark sends a lefty to the mound, Mauch replaces Ferrarese. Dark then replaces Billy O’Dell with Sam Jones. Mauch replaces Lehman with Dallas Green after two batters. All the manoeuvering takes three hours and 20 minutes. The Giants then take the nitecap, 4 – 1, as Mays triples and doubles home two runs and completes a double play with a throw home.
The Phillies and Giants play for 5 hours and 11 minutes, but the 15-inning contest ends in a 7 – 7 tie. Both teams score three in the 15th in the longest night game to date.
