The Boston Red Sox make a pair of deals. The Sox purchase Juan Marichal from the San Francisco Giants for $100,000 and trade John Curtis, Lynn McGlothen, and Mike Garman to the St. Louis Cardinals for Reggie Cleveland and Diego Segui.
The Royals deal outfielder Lou Piniella and pitcher Ken Wright to the Yankees for veteran pitcher Lindy McDaniel. The controversial trade draws the Kansas City fans’ ire, and rightfully so, when the 38 year-old right-hander wins a total of only six games during his two years with the club, with the 29 year-old outfielder enjoying 11 solid seasons in the Bronx, batting .295 and playing a major role in New York’s four appearances in the World Series.
1973 – Slugger Jim Wynn is traded to the Dodgers for pitchers Claude Osteen and Dave Culpepper. A holder of many team records, Wynn rebounds to help the Dodgers to the National League title in 1974 while Osteen would own a 9-9 mark before being traded in mid-season.
Ron Santo becomes the first player to invoke the new 10 and 5 rule. The Cubs want to trade Santo to the Angels for two pitchers, but he vetoes the deal.
The Dodgers trade OF Willie Davis to the Expos for relief pitcher Mike Marshall. Marshall will win the Cy Young Award for the Dodgers next season.
1973 – The Reds trade P Ross Grimsley to the Orioles for OF Merv Rettenmund and IF Junior Kennedy. Grimsley will win 18 next year for the Orioles.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Al Bumbry beats out five other vote-getters to win American League Rookie of the Year honors. Bumbry played just 110 games, but tied for the AL lead in triples (11) and batted .337.
1973 – San Francisco Giants outfielder Gary Matthews, who batted .300 in 145 games, outpolls eight others, receiving 11 of 24 nominations for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.
1973 – Pitcher Bob Gibson wins the last of his nine Gold Gloves, and Joe Morgan wins the first of his five at second base.
1973 – Pete Rose wins the National League MVP Award in a controversial vote, edging out Willie Stargell. Rose led the NL with 230 hits and won his third batting crown with a .338 mark. Stargell led the league with 44 home runs, 119 runs batted in, and a .646 slugging percentage while batting .299.
