Oakland Athletics outfielder Reggie Jackson wins the American League MVP Award in unanimous fashion. The future Hall of Famer led the AL with 32 home runs, 117 RBI, 99 runs and a .531 slugging percentage, in helping the Athletics to their second straight World Series title.
Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer is named the 1973 American League Cy Young Award winner. Palmer collected 22 victories and led the circuit with a 2.40 ERA.

The Cubs trade second baseman Glenn Beckert and minor league prospect Bobby Fenwick to the Padres for outfielder Jerry Morales. The deal will prove to be beneficial to Chicago when their new fly chaser spends four productive years in his first tenure with the club, including an All-Star selection in 1977, and their former infielder playing in only 73 games before being released by San Diego during the first month of the 1975 season.
1973 – Lefthander Jerry Reuss is traded to the Pirates for catcher Milt May. Reuss has an inconsistent two seasons in Houston, posting a 25-26 record with one save, but he improves on his way through a major league career that lasts 22 years. May, stuck behind Manny Sanguillen in Pittsburgh, bats .265 in two seasons before leaving for Detroit during a rebuilding purge. Also on this date, reliever Tim Byrdak is born in Oak Lawn, IL. The lefthander works out of the bullpen from 2008 to 2010 with a 3.53 ERA.
