1999 – Diamondbacks P Todd Stottlemyre makes his first start since tearing the rotator cuff in his right arm on May 17th. Stottlemyre, who eschewed surgery in favor of a strengthening program, gives up seven hits to the Pirates in 4 2/3 innings, including a pair of homers by Brian Giles. He will go 2-1 the rest of the year.

1999 – Cincinnati defeats Pittsburgh, 1 – 0, as P Pete Harnisch hurls a one-hitter. Harnisch fans 12 in his eight innings of work, allowing only a 7th-inning single to SS Mike Benjamin, and Scott Williamson pitches the hitless 9th.

Tampa Bay defeats Detroit, 4 – 0, as Wilson Alvarez (6 innings) and Albie Lopez (3 innings) combine on a one-hitter. OF Gabe Kapler’s triple is the only Tiger hit.

The A’s obtain OF Rich Becker from the Brewers in exchange for a player to be named.

1B Dale Sveum hits home runs from both sides of plate to power Pittsburgh to a 12 – 6 win over Cincinnati.

Jesse Orosco sets a major league mark pitching in his 1,072nd game, passing Dennis Eckersley on the all-time career appearance list. The 43 year-old Baltimore reliever, who will finish his 24-year career appearing in 1252 major league contests, retires the only batter he faces on a fly ball to center field in the Orioles’ 8-3 victory over Minnesota at Camden Yards.

Sic transit gloria. The Cards send Jose Jimenez to AAA Memphis less than two months after his no-hitter against Arizona. He joins Bobo Holloman as the only pitcher to go to the minors in the same year in which he pitched a no-hitter.

The Expos defeat the Giants, 2 – 1, as Montreal P Steve Kline ties a major league mark by fanning four batters in the 7th inning.
