The Texas Longhorns win their 5th College World Series, beating South Carolina, 12 – 6, in the finale of the 2002 College World Series. Chris Carmichael hits a three-run home run and closer Huston Street picks up his 4th save and is selected the Outstanding Player. Augie Garrido is the first coach to win CWS championships at two schools. Texas last won a CWS in 1983, when Roger Clemens pitched for the Longhorns.

A saddened Joe Girardi, the Cubs’ player rep, informs the Wrigley Field crowd the scheduled game between St. Louis and the Cubs is postponed due to the death of Darryl Kile, who is found dead in his Chicago hotel room as the result of coronary disease. The 33 year-old Cardinal right-hander is the first active major league player to pass away during the regular season since 1979, when Yankee captain Thurman Munson was killed while practicing landing his plane at the Akron-Canton Airport.

On June 21, 2002 The Florida Marlins defeat the Detroit Tigers, 4 – 1, as Luis Castillo hits safely in his 35th consecutive game, tying Fred Clarke (1895), Ty Cobb (1917), and George Sisler (1924-1925) for the 10th-longest hitting streak in major league history. The Florida Marlins infielder’s 3rd-inning infield hit off knuckleballer Steve Sparks’ glove also surpasses Benito Santiago’s 1987streak for longest established by a Latin player.

During the New York-Penn League game between the New Jersey Cardinals and the Staten Island Yankees, a fan hops a fence and goes onto the field to argue an umpire’s call at first base. The 38 year-old woman, who will face disorderly person charges, is at the game with her eight year-old daughter’s Brownie troop.

On June 20, A 4 1/2 hour closed-casket public viewing is held at Busch Stadium for Jack Buck, the 77-year-old Hall of Fame broadcaster, who died from complications following lung surgery. The bronze statue depicting him at the microphone outside the stadium is stuffed with cards, stuffed animals, photographs and other memorabilia in memory of the KMOX legend.

On June 20, Luis Castillo extends his hitting streak to 34 games breaking the 1922 record established by Rogers Hornsby for the longest hitting streak by a second baseman. The Dominican infielder’s streak, the 14th longest in major league history, also ties Benito Santiago’s record set in 1987 for longest accomplished by a Latin player.

On June 18, 2002 Marlins infielder Luis Castillo beats out a dribbler to the box, extending his consecutive-game hitting streak to 33 straight contests. The sixth-inning single in Florida’s 2-1 victory over Cleveland at Pro Player Stadium ties Rogers Hornsby’s 80 year-old record for the longest such stretch to be accomplished by a second baseman.
