After giving up eight runs in the top of the second inning, the Yankees storm back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score with eight tallies of their own in an eventual 13-9 loss to the White Sox in New York. It is only the second time in major league history that eight or more runs are scored in the same inning by each team.

Both Barry Bonds (1 for 2, 2 BB) and Alex Rodriguez (2 for 5) end long hitless slumps but neither goes deep, Bonds remaining one homer shy of Hank Aaron and A-Rod one shy of 500. In A-Rod’s game, the White Soxtop the Yankees, 13 – 9. Both teams score 8 times in the second to set a major league record for runs in that frame.

Buddy Bell announces prior to tonight’s 5-3 extra-inning victory against the Twins that he will leave his post as the Royals’ manager at the end of the season. The 54 year-old skipper will join the organization’s front office next season as a senior adviser to Kansas City’s GM Dayton Moore.

Rather than send 25,000 fans back out onto crowded highways, the Twins decide to play tonight’s game against the Royals after a moment of silence in memory of victims of the nearby bridge collapse. Tomorrow’s game at the Metrodome has been postponed.
