The Tampa Bay Rays release designated hitter Pat Burrell, after his average falls to .202. A key member of the Phillies’ World Championship team in 2008, Burrell never got his bat going in a season-and-a-half with the Rays, hitting a combined .218 with 16 home runs. To replace him, the Rays promote veteran Hank Blalock from the Durham Bulls.

After Twins manager Ron Gardenhire orders an intentional walk to Mark Teixeira and brings in righty Matt Guerrier to face Alex Rodriguez in the 7th, the Yankee third baseman blasts his 19th career grand slam to pass Frank Robinson for 7th on the all-time career home run list and give New York an 8 – 4 win.

Mat Latos comes extremely close to pitching a no-hitter, but has to settle for a one-hit shutout, the first complete game of his career, as San Diego beats the Giants, 1 – 0. The only hit he allows is a ground ball by Eli Whiteside in the 6th that glances off him towards third baseman Chase Headley, whose throw to first base is a fraction of a second too late to retire Whiteside. For good measure, Latos also drives in the only run of the game.

Zack Greinke finally earns his first win of the year, but it comes too late to save Trey Hillman’s job. The Royals announce after the 6 – 4 win over the Indians that their manager has been fired and will be replaced by former Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost. The Royals are 12-23 and in a familiar last place in the AL Central.

Trey Hillman, who compiled a 152-207 record in his two-plus years with the club, is fired by the Royals. The popular and well-respected 47 year-old, who piloted the team to a 12-23 record this season, including today’s victory, will be replaced by the team’s current baseball operations assistant and former Brewers manager, Ned Yost.

Major League Baseball issues a warning to the Phillies after investigating allegations made by the Colorado Rockies that bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer used binoculars to steal signs from the centerfield bullpen in the game between the teams on May 10th. In today’s game, Colorado wins, 4 – 3, as Miguel Olivo goes 5 for 5, capping his perfect day with a walk-off home run off Chad Durbin in the 10th inning.

The Nationals continue to surprise, beating the Mets, 6 – 4, at Citi Field, thanks to Roger Bernadina’s first two homers this year. The second is a two-run shot off closer Francisco Rodriguez in the 9th inning and comes moments after Bernadina makes a diving game-saving catch to rob Jeff Francoeur with the bases loaded. Nats starter Craig Stammen contributes the other 3 RBI but does not figure in the decision; instead, reliever Tyler Clippard picks up his major-league leading 7th win, followed by Matt Capps’s 14th save, which is also a major league high so far this season.

Due to security concerns raised as a result of the G-20 Summit in Toronto, MLB switches the Phillies’ scheduled visit to Canada to play the Blue Jays to Philadelphia. The visitors will be considered the home team, batting last, and can employ a designated hitter in the National League’s Citizens Bank Park.

Johnny Cueto comes within about a foot of a no-hitter when SS Paul Janish dives to stop Ronny Cedeno’s ground ball in the 3rd inning, only to see it deflect off his glove for a single. That’s the only base hit for the Pirates, as the Reds hurler records a 9 – 0 one-hitter. Chris Heisey gets his first three major league hits in the game, including a home run.
