In the Marlins’ 6-4 victory over Cincinnati in Miami, Jose Reyes is charged with baseball’s unofficial 500,000th error. The All-Star shortstop earns the dubious distinction when he flubs Drew Stubbs’ ground ball in the seventh inning.
In a thirty-minute pregame ceremony, four U.S. Marine pilots unveiled a bronze statue of Jerry Coleman at Petco Park honoring the longtime Padres broadcaster for his 70 years of major league service in the booth and as a player, and for his distinguished career in the Marine Corps, where he flew 120 combat missions during WWII and the Korean conflict. The 7-foot, 5-inch sculpture, which sits on a granite base, is in front of three 4-foot by 8-foot panels that capture the 88 year-old’s roles in baseball, the military, and as a broadcaster.
2012 – Chris Sale wins his 17th game of the year as the White Sox shut out the Twins, 6 – 0. The Sox stay ahead of the Tigers in the AL Central, although Detroit also wins by shutout, 4 – 0, over the Indians, as Justin Verlander is the winner.
The A’s record their 12th straight win on the road in beating the Angels, 4 – 1. Rookie A.J. Griffin improves to 6-0 on the year; he is the first A’s pitcher to win his first six career decisions since Jim Nash started out 7-0 with the 1966 Kansas City Athletics.
The Yankees remain tied with the Orioles in the AL East with a 5 – 4 win over Boston. SS Derek Jeter has to leave the game in the 8th inning with a strained hamstring, although the injury does not appear to be serious. An inning earlier, Boston’s Dustin Pedroia also exited the game, but for a different reason: his wife Kelli, who is attending the game at Fenway Park, goes into labor to deliver the couple’s second child.
The Angels complete a three-game sweep of the Tigers with a 3 – 2 win. Rookie OF Mike Trout hits a lead-off homer for the second straight game and Zack Greinke pitches a five-hitter. After winning 15 of their last 18 games, the Angels have inserted themselves back into the playoff picture as they are now even with Tampa Bay, and one game behind Baltimore and Oakland.
B.J. Upton hits three home runs to back the pitching of James Shields as Tampa Bay shuts out Texas, 6 – 0. With the Yankees beating the Orioles, 13 – 3, the standings in the AL East have New York one game in front of Baltimore, and two ahead of Tampa Bay.
The Nationals announce that they are shutting down ace pitcher Stephen Strasburg in order to limit his innings on the mound in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery. While other teams have taken similar decisions in the past, it is the first time a team involved in a pennant race has deliberately taken one of its top pitchers out of action of its own volition. Strasburg is 15-6, 3.16, with 197 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings. His absence will be sorely felt when the Nats drop a five-game NLDS series to the Cardinals next month, in large part because of a lack of pitching depth.
The Orioles defeat the Yankees, 5 – 4, to tie the Bronx Bombers for first place in the AL East once again, but the win is costly. RF Nick Markakis breaks his left thumb when hit by a CC Sabathia pitch in the 5th inning, putting him out for the remainder of the year. Mark Reynolds, Lew Ford and J.J. Hardy homer for the Orioles. Closer Jim Johnson almost blows a 5 – 3 lead when he loads the bases on three singles with none out in the 9th; Nick Swisher brings the Yankees within one on a force out, before Mark Teixeira is declared out when sliding head-first into first base while vainly trying to avoid a game-ending double play. Teixeira and manager Joe Girardi blast umpire Jerry Meals for his call after the game.
Darwin Barney sets the National League record for consecutive errorless games by a second baseman with 124, surpassing Ryne Sandberg, another Cub infielder, who played his consecutive errorless streak at second between the 1989 and 1990 seasons. The major league mark for consecutive errorless games at second base is 186, established by Tiger infielder Placido Polanco from 2006-08.
