1996 – Barry Bonds becomes only the fourth player in major league history to amass 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases when he homers in the 3rd inning in the San Francisco Giants’ 6 – 3 victory over the Florida Marlins. His father, Bobby Bonds, along with godfather Willie Mays and Andre Dawson are the only other players to reach 300-300.
Chris Bosio pitches a no-hitter to give the Seattle Mariners a 7 – 0 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Bosio walks the first two batters he faces, then finishes the game by retiring the last 27 Red Sox in a row. He strikes out four in his 97-pitch gem.
The Cubs blow out the Phils, 14 – 9, to give Greg Maddux his 18th win. Maddux gives up three earned runs in six innings. Led by Andre Dawson’s four hits, the first four hitters collect 11 hits and 11 ribbies for the Cubs. Dave Hollins homers for the Phils, while Dawson, Ryne Sandberg and Rick Wilkins go deep for Chicago. Mark Grace makes an error, ending his streak of 102 errorless games at 1B; his streak began after two errors on May 18th vs. the Dodgers.
Umpire Bill Hohn ejects an Atlanta Braves fan from the Braves-Cubs game for making obscene gestures. The gestures might have been meant for the Braves, who are shut out, 8 – 0. Greg Maddux goes seven innings for the win over John Smoltz, giving up three runs. The other five come off Juan Berenguer, who lasts a third of an inning. Chicago gets homers from Kal Daniels, Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg and Mark Grace.
Cal Ripken Jr.’s three-run home run lifts the American League to a 4 – 2 win over the National League in the annual All-Star Game. Andre Dawson homers for the NLers who lose for the 4th straight year. Ripken, who also won the pre-All-Star Game Home Run Derby, is named the game’s MVP. Tony LaRussa becomes the first manager with three straight All-Star victories.
1991 – In the greatest extra-inning comeback in major league history, the Pittsburgh Pirates score six runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to erase a five-run Cubs lead built in the top of the inning on Andre Dawson’s grand slam. The Pirates had rallied earlier from a 7 – 2 deficit to tie the game in the 9th.
1990 – Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs steals his 300th base in an 11 – 5 loss to the New York Mets, becoming only the second player in major league history with 300 home runs, 300 steals and 2,000 hits. Willie Mays was the other.
On May 22, 1990, Chicago Cubs outfielder Andre Dawson breaks Roger Maris’ intentional walk record when he receives five intentional free passes from the Cincinnati Reds.
