On April 16, 1987, Hall of Fame umpire Jocko Conlan dies in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 89. Conlan served as an American League arbiter from 1941 to 1965 after a brief major league playing career with the Chicago White Sox. He also umpired in five World Series. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
1985 – Astros touch Steve Howe, Tom Niedenfuer and Ken Howell for six runs in the ninth to shock the Dodgers, 7-3. Kevin Bass’ double starts the rally which makes a winner of Dave Smith. The key play occurs when Howell misfires on Bill Doran’s suicide squeeze bunt, allowing two Astros to score.
In his first three at-bats, A’s Dave Kingman hits three home runs, including a grand slam, driving in eight runs against the Mariners in a 9-6 victory. ‘Sky King’ will compile five three-round-tripper games during his 16-year career, second only to Johnny Mize, who accomplished the feat six times from 1938 to 1950 while with the Cardinals and Yankees.
On April 16, 1983, Steve Garvey of the San Diego Padres sets a National League record for the most consecutive games played. Garvey plays in his 1,118th straight game, breaking the mark held by Hall of Famer Billy Williams. Garvey picks up two hits in an 8-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, his former team.
On April 16, 1978, Bob Forsch of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. Forsch, who wins a 5-0 decision, becomes the first Cardinals’ pitcher to pitch a no-hitter in St. Louis since Jesse Haines in 1924.
Regulations force Oakland Athletics pitcher Vida Blue to discard his old, discolored lucky cap because it is no longer identical in color, trim and style to those of his teammates.
On April 16, 1972, Chicago Cubs rookie Burt Hooton walks seven batters but still manages to hurl a 4-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. Hooton accomplishes the feat in just his fourth major league game.
On April 16, 1970, Cincinnati Reds ace Jim Maloney tears his Achilles tendon while running the bases and is replaced by rookie left-hander Don Gullett, who wins his first major league game. Although Maloney will eventually make a comeback from the injury, he will never win another game.
1964 – Texas Governor John Connally tosses out the first pitch for the Colts’ home opener, a 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Braves. Connally tosses lefthanded because his right arm is still healing from gunshot wounds suffered in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
