2018 – Mookie Betts of the Red Sox hits the first cycle in the majors this season, completing the feat with a solo homer in the 9th, but it’s in vain as Toronto hands Boston a rare defeat, 8 – 5.
Mookie Betts hits three solo homers to lead the Red Sox to a 5 – 4 win over the Royals. All three blasts come off Danny Duffy, with the last one breaking a 4 – 4 tie in the 7th. It is already the second three-homer game for Betts this season and the fourth of his career, tying him for the franchise record held by Ted Williams. At 26, he is the youngest player to have four such games.
Sean Manaea tosses the 12th no-hitter in A’s franchise history and the first since southpaw Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010, when he keeps the opponents hitless in the team’s 3-0 victory over the 17-2 Red Sox at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. The 26 year old southpaw’s performance ends Boston’s run of 3,987 games without being no-hit, a streak dating back Mariners’ Chris Bosio’s no-no against the club at the Kingdome on April 22, 1993.
2018 – Boston Red Sox owner John Henry officially petitions the city of Boston, MA to rename Yawkey Way, which is located just outside Fenway Park. The street was named after former owner and Hall of Fame member Tom Yawkey, but history has not been kind to its namesake’s memory, as he is widely blamed for delaying the integration of the team, making them the last major league franchise to have am African-American player in its line-up, 12 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color line.
OF Mookie Betts of the Red Sox wins the first salary arbitration filing to be decided this off-season and will earn $10.5 million, a significant raise over his previous salary of $950,000. He will still be a huge bargain, as he will win the MVP Award and lead the Sox to a World Series title.
In the ALDS, Houston eliminates Boston with a 5 – 4 win in Game 4. Boston takes a 3 – 2 lead in the 5th on a two-run homer by Andrew Benintendi off Justin Verlander, making the first relief appearance of his career. In the 8th, Alex Bregman ties it with a solo homer off Chris Sale, also making an unexpected relief outing, before Carlos Beltran drives in the go-ahead run with a single off closer Craig Kimbrel.
The Red Sox continue to pound the ball as Mookie Betts hits three homers and drives in five runs in a 6 – 2 win over the Orioles. Xander Bogaerts extends his hitting streak to 24 games with a 7th-inning single. The Red Sox start off with a blast as Betts and Dustin Pedroia go deep back-to-back against Kevin Gausman to open the game.

For the third straight year, fans turn out in droves at Stade Olympique in Montreal, QC for the first of two exhibition games by the Toronto Blue Jays against the Boston Red Sox. Over 52,000 pack the stadium to see former Montreal Expos greats Pedro Martinez and Tim Raines throw the ceremonial first pitch. Boston wins the game, 4 – 2, in 10 innings, on Ryan LaMarre’s two-out, two-run double off Pat McCoy.
The organ, played by the legendary Nancy Faust who entertained fans at Old Comiskey Park and the U.S. Cellular Field for more than 3,000 White Sox home games over 41 seasons, is purchased by Red Sox organist Josh Kantor, who grow up in Chicago listening to her renditions of Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye and Take Me Out to the Ballgame. The iconic instrument was put up for bid by the team during their annual holiday charity auction at U.S. Cellular Field.
