Both teams match a major league record they set in 1901 for most players scoring two or more runs (Boston, 9: Philadelphia, 4). Overall, pitchers give up 21 walks in the debacle. Despite the high score, only one home run is hit – by Ted Williams in a game one newspaper calls “a two hour and 50 minute marathon.” The previous record of 35 runs was set by the same two clubs in 1901: Boston 23, A’s 12. The major league mark is 49 by the Cubs and Phillies on August 25, 1922.
