2012 – New Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen is already in mid-season form. He gets ejected in the 6th inning of an otherwise placid Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox for arguing a foul ball call with umpire Tim Timmons. As Ozzie explains afterwards: “I don’t mind getting ejected, man. That’s my job. If I get ejected protecting my players, I can sleep at night.”
Jason Varitek, captain of the Boston Red Sox and a key member of its championship squads in 2004 and 2007, announces his retirement at a press conference in Fort Myers, FL. The durable catcher played his entire 15-year major league career with Boston.
The Red Sox hire Bobby Valentine to be their new manager. He was most recently an analyst for ESPN, but has also managed the Texas Rangers and New York Mets for long stretches, in addition to spending seven years as a skipper for the Chiba Lotte Marines, leading them to one Japan Series title.
The Red Sox announce that they have parted ways with manager Terry Francona. Francona managed the Sox for 8 seasons, including two World Series championships in 2004 and 2007, but his tenure ended with the team’s dramatic collapse this September, which cost it what appeared to be a certain spot in the postseason.

2011 – The Red Sox sign reliever Alfredo Aceves to a one-year contract. Aceves, who has spent his entire career with the New York Yankees is coming off a back injury that cut short his 2010 season, and a broken collarbone suffered in an off-season bicycle accident.
The Red Sox complete their deal for Adrian Gonzalez by sending minor league right-hander Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, outfielder Reymond Fuentes, and a player to be named to San Diego for the All-Star first baseman. The left-handed slugger, who is expected to take advantage of the Green Monster’s proximity to home plate, is entering the last year of his contract, and the deal does not include a contract extension to stay in Boston.
