On September 10, 1934, Hank Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers decides to play today’s game even though it conflicts with the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah. 1934 – P Wes Ferrell hits two home runs in a 10-inning, 3 – 2 win for the Red Sox over the White Sox. It is the second time this season he has a pair of homers, and the third in his career. He will hit 2 home runs in a game 6 times before he finishes.
41,766 turn out to Fenway Park to see what will probably be Babe Ruth’s last game in Boston. In game one of the doubleheader, Ruth goes 2 for 5 with a double, but misplays a Billy Werber line drive into a triple. Ruth is 0 for 1 with two walks in the second game, leaving in the 6th inning. He will in fact return to Hubtown in 1935, when he finishes his playing career with the Boston Braves.
Myril Hoag becomes first Yankee in franchise history to collect six hits in one game, a major league record of six singles. The 26 year-old outfielder’s 6-for-6 performance helps the Bronx Bombers rout Boston at Fenway Park, 15-3.
At Fenway Park, Carl Reynolds, Moose Solters, Rick Ferrell and Bucky Walters hit four consecutive triples for the Boston Red Sox en route to a 14 – 4 win over the Detroit Tigers.
1934 – Mildred Didrickson (also known as Babe Zaharias), the renowned all-around female athlete, pitches the 1st inning for the Philadelphia Athletics in a spring training exhibition game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. She gives up one walk but no hits. Two days later she pitches again, this time one inning for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Boston Red Sox. Didrickson is less successful the second time, giving up four hits and three runs. Bill Hallahan relieves her, as she does not have an at bat in either game. She will also play several games for the House of David this season. Didrickson is the second female to play exhibitions with a major league team. Previously, first baseman Lizzie Murphy played for an American League All-Star team on August 14, 1922.
An early afternoon five-hour blaze destroys much of Fenway Park’s newly-constructed concrete and steel left-field grandstand and center-field bleachers, that were built to replace the wooden structures in the 22 year-old ballpark. Tom Yawkey, the Red Sox’s new owner, will have construction crews work overtime to rebuild the team’s home in time for the season opener against Washington on April 17.
Connie Mack is still selling. First he sells Lefty Grove, the A’s top winner in each of the past five seasons, along with Max Bishop and George Walberg, to the Boston Red Sox for $125,000 and two players, pitcher Bob Kline and infielder Rabbit Warstler. Next, catcher Mickey Cochrane goes to Detroit, then George Earnshaw and backstop Johnny Pasek, just acquired from the Tigers, go to the White Sox for $20,000 and catcher Charlie Berry. Berry once led the NFL in scoring and will become a major league umpire in the 1940s. The day will be known as “Black Tuesday” in Philadelphia.
