At Braves Field, Cardinals’ first baseman Ripper Collins does not make a putout during the 13-3 nine-inning loss to Boston. The St. Louis infielder, who will also not make a putout playing first for the Cubs in a game against Brooklyn in 1937, is the only player to have accomplished the very rare feat twice in the major leagues.
Pirate center fielder Lloyd Waner sets the major league mark, recording 18 putouts during a doubleheader played at Braves Field. The future Hall of Famer’s defense helps the Bucs to sweep last-place Boston, 4-2 and 5-1.
At Braves Field, young pitcher Dizzy Dean of the St. Louis Cardinals faces the Boston Braves and 40-year-old veteran Babe Ruth. Dean walks Ruth in his first at-bat, then with two strikes on the Bambino, waves his outfielders back and throws a fastball down the middle that Ruth misses for a strikeout. Dean wins the game, 7 – 0, and in his first at bat, hits a home run over Ruth’s head in left field. Dean will face Ruth again on May 19th, holding him hitless again, and winning that game as well.
With the band playing Jingle Bells at Boston’s Braves Field on a snowy day with near freezing temperatures, Babe Ruth makes his National league debut, hitting a homer and a single off Giants’ legend Carl Hubbell. The Braves beat New York, 4-2, but the team will go on to win only 37 more games this season.
1931 – At Braves Field, Jack Quinn of the Brooklyn Robins becomes the oldest pitcher to start an Opening Day game. The 47-year-old Pennsylvanian gets tagged with the lost as the Boston Braves beats Brooklyn, 7 – 4.
Grover Cleveland Alexander of the Philadelphia Phillies makes his last major league appearance, giving up two hits and two runs in relief in the Boston Braves’ 5 – 1 victory. The Phillies release the 43-year-old veteran a few hours after the game. In a 20-season career, Alexander posted a 373-208 record with 2,198 strikeouts and a 2.56 ERA. He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1938.
At Boston, the Cards trim the Braves, 10 – 5. The Birds are led by Jim Bottomley’s three triples.

The New York Giants hit four inside-the-park home runs at Braves Field. George Kelly hits a pair and Ross Youngs and Dave Bancroft both hit one apiece as the Giants defeat the Boston Braves, 12 – 3.
