1910 – In the most evenly matched game ever, the Pirates and Superbas each have eight runs, 13 hits, 38 at bats, five strikeouts, three walks, one hit batter, one passed ball, 13 assists, 27 putouts, two errors, and use two pitchers. Darkness ends the game before the symmetry does.
Christy Mathewson and catcher Chief Meyers are all that the Giants need in the opener against Brooklyn. Matty allows three hits in shutting down the Superbas, and the Chief clubs his first major league homer in the 2nd inning, a grand slam to score all the runs. New York wins, 4 – 0, beating Elmer Knetzer. The Superbas take the nitecap, 10 – 1, behind Bugs Raymond. Rookie Zack Wheat has his first two major league hits in the nitecap, after being collared in the opener by Matty.
At Washington Park, the Superbas sweep a twin bill from the visiting Cardinals with identical 1-0 scores. Brooklyn’s southpaw Nap Rucker, who will finish second in the NL with 200 strikeouts, whiffs 16 Redbirds in one of the contests.
Brooklyn and Chicago swap shutouts, with George Bell topping Chicago’s Orval Overall, 1 – 0, in the opener. Ed Reulbach comes back in the second game to beat Kaiser Wilhelm, 4 – 0. Bill Bergen’s hitless streak ends. It started after he singled in his first at bat against the Giants on June 29th. It ends in the second game today when, after sitting out the first game, he has a 4th-inning infield single against Ed Reulbach. The catcher will hit just .139 this season, not a yearly low for the punchless catcher.
At Washington Park, the Superbas gaff the Giants, 7 – 2, beating Hooks Wiltse in the opener. The Giants come back in the nitecap, 3 – 0, behind Christy Mathewson. Matty strikes out nine and allows four hits.
1909 – Before an Opening Day crowd of 30,000 at the Polo Grounds, Red Ames of the New York Giants pitches a no-hitter for nine innings against the Brooklyn Superbas, but surrenders a hit with one out in the 10th, then loses the game, 3 – 0, in the 13th. The Giants’ outfield has no putouts.
On September 26, 1908, at Washington Park in Brooklyn New York, as the season was winding down the Chicago and Brooklyn were scheduled to play a Morning/Afternoon doubleheader. Ed Reulbach started the first game for Chicago, he pitches a 5-0 shutout limiting Brooklyn to 5 hits over 9 innings and sprinkled in 7 strikeouts….
Superbas southpaw Nap Rucker strikes out 14 Doves en route to tossing a no-hitter in the team’s 6-0 victory over Boston at Washington Park. The only runners to get on base off the talented left-handed redhead come as a result of three Brooklyn errors.
In the New York Giants home opener, 25,000 fans watch the Brooklyn Superbas take a 2 – 1 lead into the 9th inning against Christy Mathewson. But in the bottom, with Fred Tenney on first base, Mike Donlin hits a walk-off home run to give the Giants a 3 – 2 win.
