6/17/1891 – The Colts (now Cubs) played in Cleveland. Through the seventh inning, the Colts’ Bill Hutchinson batted in Malachi Kittridge’s place in the batting order but the Spiders let it go. In the seventh, Fred Pfeffer walked and Hutchinson, batting out of turn, singled, moving Pfeffer to third. As Kittridge stepped to the plate, the Spiders told umpire Tim Lynch that Hutchinson batted out of turn. This out ended the inning, killing the Colts’ rally.
Bill Phillips becomes the first pitcher to allow two grand slams in the same inning, when Tom Burns and Malachi Kittridge both take the Alleghenys’ right-hander deep in the same frame of an 18-5 loss to the Chicago Colts. In 1999, Chan Ho Park will match the dubious feat, but will have the distinction of giving up both bases-full homers to the same batter, Fernando Tatis of the Cardinals.
Cy Young, making his major league debut, is credited with the win when the Cleveland Spiders beat the Colts in Chicago’s West Side Park, 8-1. During his 22-year career, the 23 year-old right-hander will average more than 23 victories per season en route to a major league record of 511 victories, a mark believed by many to be unbreakable.
The National League’s biggest Opening Day crowd, 6,311 at West Side Park, watches Chicago Colts pitcher Wild Bill Hutchison beat the visiting Cincinnati Reds, 5 – 4, earning the first of his 42 wins and 65 complete games out of 66 starts in the season.
