The Reds sell Babe Herman to the Tigers. The 34 year-old outfielder, batting .300 for his new team, will appear in only 17 contests with Detroit before effectively retiring from the game, although he will return to play briefly for the war-time Dodgers in 1945.
1937 – In Cincinnati, OH, the worst flood in the city’s history inundates Crosley Field, covering home plate with as much as 21 feet of cold water. The lower grandstand is completely covered. Reds pitchers Gene Schott and Lee Grissom row a boat out from the center field wall and the resulting photo appears across the country. Fortunately, with the season two months away, Opening Day will be unaffected.
1936 – Judge Landis declares Lee Handley and Johnny Peacock of the Cincinnati Reds free agents. They had been covered up on minor league teams by the Reds.
1936 – Joe Medwick sets a still-standing National League record with his 64th double.
Babe Herman, who quit the Reds in a dispute over a bonus, rejoins the team on orders from Commissioner Landis.
Kitty Burke, an avid Reds’ fan annoyed at Ducky Medwick’s retort to her heckling by telling her she couldn’t get a hit if she were swinging at an elephant, grabs Babe Herman’s bat as he comes to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, comes on to the field demanding a turn at bat. After some consternation, Cardinal pitcher Paul Dean complies by tossing the ball underhanded to the popular local nightclub blues singer, who grounds out to the pitcher, much to the delight of the cheering crowd.
On July 3, 1935, the Chicago Cubs release future Hall of Fame outfielder Kiki Cuyler as a cost-cutting measure.
