In the bottom of the ninth of Game 4, Pirates right-hander Johnny Miljus loads the bases with no out, but gets Lou Gehrig to strike out swinging and strikes out Bob Meusel looking. The 32 year-old Pittsburgh hurler, facing Tony Lazzeri with two outs and a 0-1 count, throws a wild pitch, and Earle Combs races home with the winning run to give the Yankees the Fall Classic sweep of the Bucs and the teamâs second world championship.
In the fourth inning of a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, shortstop Jimmy Cooney of the Chicago Cubs catches a line drive off Paul Waner, steps on second base to retire Lloyd Waner and then tags Clyde Barnhart coming from first base for an unassisted triple play. This is the second time Cooney has participated in an unassisted triple play; the first time came as a victim in Glenn Wrightâs triple killing on May 7, 1925.
At Redland Fieldâ Pittsburghâs Clyde Barnhart hits a 9th-inning line drive down the right field line that gets lost in the tarp in front of the grandstand. By the time RF Pat Duncanfinds the ballâ Barnhart scores his first major league homer inside-the-park to tie the match at 2 â 2. Eppa Rixey gives up the homer but holds on for a 4 â 3â 13-inning victory. It is the only homer Rixey will allow in 301 innings pitchedâ and just one of two homers Reds pitchers will allow at home this season. Except for thisâ Rixey would have set the record for post-dead ball pitchersâ a record that Allen Sothoron will post this year in fewer innings.
October 2, 1920 at Forbes Field â With the last two games rained out, fans get their moneyâs worth in Pittsburgh as the Pirates and Reds, battling to determine 3rd place, play the centuryâs only tripleheader.
